Dental Abfraction Case Study

A 38-year old patient, whom we will refer to as Kevin, came to the Cosmetic Dentistry Center because his teeth were becoming extremely sensitive to cold water and air. He explained he had first noticed this one night several weeks back while drinking ice tea, and that the condition had become increasingly worse and painful, not only when he drank something cold, but even when he breathed in cold air while running in Memorial Park in the morning. He also said that his wife had woke him up a number of times in the past few weeks, telling him that she had heard him grinding his teeth in his sleep. Kevin was afraid that he might have an abscess and require a root canal. We were more optimistic, because his symptoms sounded more like dental abfraction.

Both sensitivity to cold and the grinding of his teeth (a condition called Bruxism), are symptoms of dental abfraction–an all too common condition where the teeth at or below the gum line become notched. This causes heightened tooth sensitivity and discomfort, and, depending on the degree of dental abfraction, can result in conditions such as bicuspid drop-off, worn anterior teeth that become frayed around the edges, gingival recession, exposed dentin, and bruxism.

Dental abfraction is caused by teeth that are not perfectly aligned. One tooth impacts the opposing row of teeth sooner than the rest, causing too much stress on that individual tooth. This causes enamel to separate from the inner dentin layer and created notches at or below the gumline.

Milder cases of this syndrome can often be treated with something as simple as conservative topical treatments of either fluoride gel or Sensodyne tooth paste. These treatments can be applied with custom, flexible trays to fit the patient’s mouth and applied for 20 minutes each day. Other, more severe cases, however, may call for more aggressive forms of treatment. In Kevin’s case, we simply would not know until we conducted a thorough case history study and intraoral analysis of his teeth.

When Kevin arrived, the first thing we did was to pull up his medical history on the computer. Each of our dental treatment rooms has one or more computers that allow us to conduct his type of preliminary research. Kevin’s medical history revealed that he had been involved in a minor accident where he had been hit in the mouth by a falling object. Although he bled severely enough to require stitches, he had not lost any teeth, so he had assumed it was only his lip that had been cut in the accident. Actually, some of his teeth had been knocked slightly out of alignment. This had not altered the appearance of his smile or caused noticeable pain when he chewed, but over time, it had eroded two of his teeth with severe dental abfraction.

Another advantage that the Cosmetic Dentistry Center offers is the ability to closely examine teeth and gums with an intraoral camera that produces an exceptionally high-resolution, full-color image of the teeth and gums so we can make accurate diagnoses of otherwise mysterious ailments. In Kevin’s case, intraoral examination revealed a very acute case of gingival recession and dental abfraction below the receding gum line. Both tooth roots were also exposed, and revealed themselves to be the source of his pain. While it is true that abfraction can result in an exposed nerve that then becomes inflamed, this does not always mean that the root is dying and requires removal. Under close examination, we discovered both tooth roots to be only inflamed, but otherwise alive and healthy.

This level of precise diagnosis would not have been possible without the help of advanced technology, which in turn allowed us to make a precise and accurate diagnosis of the severity of Kevin’s dental abfraction. At the end of the day, we were able to circumvent a full root canal in plenty of time, and apply tooth-colored, bonded filling material over the surfaces of both roots.

Since then, Kevin’s symptoms have disappeared, and further topical treatments of Sensodyne have successfully reversed much of the gingival recession that resulted from his dental abfraction.

If, after reading Kevin’s story, you fear that you may be suffering from dental abfraction because of recent sensitivity, receding gums, or Bruxism, please call us today to schedule an appointment.

How To Choose Desk And Study Lamps

Buying desk or study lamps can be almost as personal as choosing a pair of glasses. This is because of all of the lamps that you could possibly purchase these lamps must be easy on your eyes. Your ideal type of desk lamp would be dependent on the condition of your eyes as well as your study or reading habits.

As you might notice, many study lamps and desk lamps on the market have halogen bulbs fitted in them. But halogen bulbs, which are one of the brightest bulbs around, are not the most suitable type of light for everyone. For one thing halogen bulbs are so bright that they can cause contrast and glare to be a problem when you are studying print. You might even see spots of green and red if the glare on the page highlights too much contrast. This is not good for your retinas over the long term and subjecting yourself to this type of eye strain could cut your study time in half. Also some people find that the halogen lamp has a subtle, barely discernible flicker that also strains the eyes.

Yet another problem with study lamps that have the halogen bulbs is that the light is very concentrated and is only really good for shining on one page of a book and not necessarily the contents of your entire desk. But the supporters of halogen lamp cite the advantage that these lamps provides in facilitating focus on reading area while visually blacking out other areas that might distract.

If you find that the glare of halogen bulbs is hard on your eyes then there are thousands of study and desk lamps on the market that take ordinary incandescent bulbs, or energy saving bulbs. If you like a really bright light when you study but don’t like halogen bulbs, you can also try using a full spectrum of light bulb in your desk or study lamp. That way you get the brightness of daylight without the headaches that can be caused by halogen light.

Desk and study lamps with regular bulbs are also available in numerous styles. The design element that seems to mostly define a study lamp or desk lamp is the bendable neck or adjustable arm that is usually made out of plastic or metal. This helps you focus the light where you need it most, however unlike halogen lamps, these more old fashioned lamps also have a bit of a soft glow that helps light up the rest of the room.

Not all desk lamps or study lamps have adjustable arms. A commonly found traditional style that is available in almost every lighting or hardware store has a squat, curved neck. Usually an oblong shade, made of brass or green glass, sheds light on the surface of the desk. This type of study or desk lamp is reminiscent of something that belongs in crime writer Raymond Chandler’s office and definitely has a classic air about it.

Follow These Study Skills Tips And Improve Your Grades

For todays education system, which has vast syllabus and excess competition, proper study skills have become a major requirement. Only then can one achieve good results. Every student has a different way of learning and working which can be optimized only with an effective study skill. On comparing two students what we get to know is that one student has the ability to grasp the significance of good study skills. But the other is confused as he doesnt know from where to start. This becomes the reason for the difference in their results.
There are certain things that we need to correct first before
improving study skills of the students. This includes the sources of distraction that divert their minds. It is very much in our notice today that the new technologies and advancement of gadgets have taken the first position in the lives of students. The best example of this is cell phones and iPods. These gadgets serve as the perfect way to turn away the minds of the students from their obligation of studies.
Teachers complain that the study habits of the students are not good and effective enough. This is very much clear from the results of the first test of the school year. Every parent has a wish for their son/daughter to earn an A+ in every class. But have they ever tried out an effective study planning for their child? Here are certain study skills tips that can help a child improve his grades:
1. While reading a particular text book, write notes about important points for proper understanding. Go through the notes everyday as this will help you to keep the topic fresh in mind.

2. Create study skill activities to be used on weekly basis. For example have a weekly session where you write down important facts that you have learnt that week, using your memory alone.
3. Give some extra time to thee subject you are weak at and dont miss out testing your self every week on that subject particularly.
4. Dont allow test anxiety to crawl into your emotions. Reduce it by spending more time preparing for each of your tests. At least keep five days of preparation time for these tests.

5. There is one very big problem with the students and that is of being reluctant to ask questions from teachers when they dont understand any topic. You should keep in mind that approaching the teacher will give you even a better understanding of the topic. Dont feel shy to do so.
7. Write down notes on important facts so that you can review them the morning of your test. If you are involved in a math or science course write out all of the important formulas on one sheet of paper and review these formulas the morning of your next test.
Following these tips and a habit of regular studies place you among the rank holders of your class and also you will be stress free during your exam days.
